Honourable Justice Folashade Aguda-Taiwo

A chip off the old block

Hon. Justice Folashade Oluwatoyin Aguda-Taiwo was born in Ibadan on the 10th of April, 1954 to the family of the Late Eminent Jurist Hon. Justice Timothy Akinola Aguda and Late Chief (Mrs.)Grace Modupeore Aguda (a former Chief Matron of the University College Hospital, Ibadan).

Folashade attended St. Luke’s Demonstration School, Oke-Ado Ibadan between 1957 as aNursery School girl until 1965 when she completed her Primary School education. She attended St. Theresa’sCollege Oke-Ado, Ibadan between 1965 and 1970 where she sat for and passed the West African School Certificate Examinations. She laer proceeded to Olivet Baptist High School, Olivets Heights Oyo where she completed her Higher School Certificate Examinations in Englsh Literature, Geography, Economics and General Paper in December 1972. She was a Church Usher and Chapel Prefect while in Oyo.

Thereafter she worked briefly as a Clerical Officer at the Establishment Division of the Registry of the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) between January and September 1973efore her admission to study Law in the same University between September, 1973 and June 1976. During the unversity holidays, Folashade worked in the Law Firmof Chief R.O. A. Akinjide (SAN) wh was a friend of her late dad.while in the unversity she was a chorister of the Anglican Church.

After graduating from Ife, Folashade attended the Ngeria Law schol, LagosCampus beteenseptember 1976 and June 1977 and was alled to the Nigeria Bar on the 2nd of July, 1977. For her NYSC she served at he Departmen of Pulic Prosecutions of the Ministry of Justice, ijebu-Ode, Ogun State as a Legal Officer.

After the successful completion of the NYSC progame,Folashade proceeded to the prestigiousUnversity of London (School of Oriental and African Studies) for her LL.M programme which she sat for and passed the following subjects in 1983, Company Law, Law of Insurance, Comparative Constitutional Law of the Commonwealth Countries and Comparative African.

After retuning back to Nigeria,she worked briefly as an Assistant Registrar in the Establishment Division of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State between 1983 and 1985. From there she joined the Nigeria Law School as Lecturer Grade 2 in May, 1985. Folashade worked her way up the academic ladder at the Law school until she became a Senior Lecturer in March 1991. She left the academic line in September 1992 to join the then booming Banking Industry where she was appointed as the Group Legal Adviser and Company Secretary to some subsidiary companies under the then Kapital Merchant Bank between 1992 and 1994.

With the collapse of the Merchant Banks then Shade joined her father’s (who was then a retired Judge) Legal Firm as an Associate of Akinola Aguda & Co between 1994 and 2001. While with her father she gathered tremendous experience in brief writing and did lots of research work with him. With encouragement from her father to go back to the teaching profession she was reabsorbed into the academic field of the Nigeria Law School in February 2001 as Deputy Director (Academics) and Head of Department of Legal Drafting and Conveyancing. She was at the same time made the Head of the Academic Unit of the Lagos Branch of the Nigeria Law School. She was in this position until she was appointed a Judge of the High Court in Ondo State on the 19th of July, 2002.

While on the Bench Hon. Justice Folashade Aguda-Taiwo worked at various Judicial Divisions of the High Court until her recent appointment as the First President of the Customary Court of Appeal Ondo State on the 14th of February, 2013.

During the judicial career of Her Lordship she attended several Local and International Conferences which include The International Association of Women Judge’s Conference in Sydney, Australia in  April, 2006 and a similar conference held in South Korea in 2010. My Lord also attended the World Jurist Conference held in the Czech Republic in Prague in 2011 of which she is a member. She was between 2008 and 2010 the Assistant Secretary of the National Association of Women Judges. She is also a Member of the Negotiation and Conflict Resolution Management Group (NCMG).

Hon. Justice Folashade Aguda-Taiwo is an extemely hardworking, highly disciplined, dedicated and an incorruptible judge. She possesses the attribtes of honesty, frankness, courage, wisdom and integrity which were imbibed in her by her parents.

My Lord is of the Christian faith of the Anglican Communion and an active Member of the YWCA (Young Women Christian Association) as well as a Memer of the Christian Friendly Society o St. Thomas’s Anglican Church in Akure. She was also a Member o the Church Parochial Council between 2010 and 2011.

Hon. Justice Aguda-Taiwo is arried to Dr. Adetunji Taiwo a Consultant Surgeon and the union is blessed with 4 lovely children and two grandsons. She is lucky to have Hon. Segun Ogunwuyi as a son-in-law. She is also a motherto so many other children who adore her. She loves socializing and enjoys reading, singing and gardening.
