NIGERIA 2011 ELECTIONS: DOES OPINION POLL COUNTS

Nigeria President

See the final election result here

The reactions that followed the absence of President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Debate aired on NN24 and anchored by Nigerian internationally acclaimed writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has left one issue behind that Nigerian youths are desirous of a change in the way things are  done but how do they want the change and in what form?

The fallout of the Presidential debate in another clime would have resulted in automatic loss for Goodluck Jonathan and that would be no thanks to his absence, however a recent poll result still reveals that Jonathan is still ahead of all other contestants in the forthcoming April Polls.

The opinion poll conducted by Pollstar, an Abuja-based survey agency, revealed that of all the 14 Presidential candidates, President Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP was leading with a score of  21 percent, with Ibrahim Shekarau of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, coming closely with 20 percent.

CPC Presidential Candidate

Muhammadu Buhari

In a statement signed by the Executive Director of Pollstar, Obi Benedict Ekene, other candidates of Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, General Muhammadu Buhari, scored 18 percent and Nuhu Ribadu of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, 17 percent followed by Patrick Utomi of Social Democratic Mega Party, SDMP, with 12 percent; Dele Momodu of National Conscience Party, NCP, 5.5 percent; Chris Okotie of Fresh Democratic Party, 3.5 percent, among others.

Ekene noted that Poll star, in the conduct of the poll, liaised with four major telecom providers, including MTN, Glo, Airtel and Etisalat in Nigeria, to gather data from approximately 70 million respondents through SMS.

According to the result, the poll showed that in Lagos, the poll showed that  Raji Fashola of Lagos got 24 percent; Ade Dosumu of PDP, 15 percent; Yomi Tokoya of ANPP, 12 percent, and Ademola Dominic of APGA, 10 percent. While the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN candidates in Ogun, Ibikunle Amosun is leading with 22 percent; Adetunji Olurin of the PDP, 17 percent, while Jide Awosede of LP got 12 percent. CPC leads in Adamawa, Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa, others

In Oyo State, ACN was in the lead with 23 percent, while PDP came very close with 19 percent, just as the CPC is leading in Adamawa, Bauchi, Kano, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Jigawa, Kebbi, even as candidates of ANPP in Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Ebonyi, and Kogi are leading in the polls.

The result also showed that the PDP was leading in Niger, Taraba, Katsina, Benue, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Rivers, Sokoto, and Cross Rivers, while the candidates of LP of Bayelsa, Timi Alaibe, and Pauline Tallen of Plateau were in the lead in their respective states.  Also, Gbemi Saraki of Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, ACPN led in Kwara, having polled 21 percent, while Fatai Ahmed of PDP got 17 percent.

For a follower of polls in Nigeria, it is an obvious fact that the electorate in Nigeria are still far behind in decision making, even when opinion polls are conducted with all fairness, electorates in Nigeria are easily swayed even at the last minute of election with few Naira in their pockets.

To make the desired change a reality, Nigerian youths need to stand up and do the first thing first by educating the electorate on reasons to reject and accepts candidates standing elections especially at the State, National Assembly and House of Assembly levels, instead of dissipating energy on the Presidential election alone, where all seems a foregone conclusion even with the incumbency factor.

  1. Olayiwola Olusanya says:

    Fellow Nigerian,
It is important to realise that this 2011 election is not about any of the individual contestant under the various party available to us as choices.

Let us think deep, particularly the youth of this country. And consider the partinent issues that we all have being exposed to by politians over the past years. I have had opportunity to leave outside this country, before i took courage to return about a year ago.
The issues that we collective need to address at this election transend the personality and ordinary appeal of the Mr President. It is unfortunate he is offered by a party who has lost credibility in all ramification.
Casting our vote for any other party but PDP is a sign of our maturity and collective resolve to demostrate the principle and tenate of democracy. Time is nobody’s friend. PDP has lead a failed experiment. I have listened to Former President Obasanjo and watched closely issues of governance, moral values, corruption, lack of electricity etc in the last 12 years. The PDP lead government has demostrated the lack of will which has resulted in lack of no way to move forward.
My proposal is that if the Ebele fans will not reason that a vote for Jonathan is a vote for PDP continuation of bad governance as the Kabal will not allow him to deliver devidend of democracy to teaming Nigerians who are tired of empty promises over the last 12 years, lest us cast our vote wisely by disstabilising the control of majority PDP enjoys at the national assembly, so that the opposition will be strengthened through the legislative arm of government to hold PDP accountable and responsible to the Nigerian populace. Nigeria politic seem not to have matured to the extent that the electorate will tust the control of power at all level to a sinle party.
    Thank you.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria, God Bless Nigerians as we use our vote wisely to distribute power accross the the existing party in the of our future and well being.

Note as we prepare to vote that the American, the British , the French ect can not build Nigeria for Nigerian. When we collectively resolve to build this nation by ourselves the Civilised nation will be forced to accord us our rightful place in the commitee of nation and stop treating our citizen as potential resistible immigrant.

    Thank you.

  2. Olayiwola Olusanya says:

Ok and we are good to go.

  3. Muttaka Ahmad says:

Change we can believed in. Hello my fellow Nigerians we should know that our last hope in our great country (i.e nigeria) is general muh’d buhari, he is the only one who know the condition of poor people, and who will wisely utilised our natural resourse for the benefit of all nigerins people, and i believe that if he elected as president of nigeria in one year our electricity will be standard 24/7 every time, i asured you that, and also we are going to have control price all over the country, therefore vote for him dont waste you time voting for some one who is only carry our money away, our natural resourse for the benefit of him only and his family…… Akasa A tsare A kuma raka….. up BB carry go we are behind you no matter what GOD WILL HELP U……….. YES

    THANKS

    may allah give us. buhari

  5. Engr. F. Adejare says:

Mr. Muttaka Ahmad have you sat down with Buhari to discuss his manifestoes and how is going to implement his plans. Buhari is not our last hope mind you.You people are making mistakes and I believe tribal sentiment may be contributing to your decision making. The issue of electricity is not what any of them can promise and deliver in 6months.It is a complex issue. Every presidential candidate has only made promises which may be empty promises at the end of the day. Come to Lagos and see for yourself what Fashola has been able to do in 4 years yet he has not done 50% of what he promised Lagosians when was campaigning. Lagosians are still not satisfied. Some that benefited immensely from Fashola’s administration are still chanting his praises while those that were marginalized are campaigning against him. No president can satisfy us in Nigeria. All we need is prayerfully vote and pray that our vote counts. God will not give us somebody that will divide the country based on religion or tribal sentiment.I know as many reasonable Nigerians do, their track records. May God arise in His infinite mercies and give us a man after His own heart not the one that will encourage religion or tribal sentiment. A man that will sanitize Nigeria.
Mind you a vote for Goodluck, Mr. Olayiwola Olusanya may not be a vote for PDP if he is ready to make a difference. Look at Lagos, Fashola came in as a Tinubu’s boy but turned round to surprise everybody including Tinubu himself. Buhari may disappoint, or who says Shekarau cannot disappoint us. Nuhu Ribadu has wined and dined with the PDP and now has pitched his tent with another God-Father lead party, ACN. Tinubu has not made enough money from Lagos, he’s presenting one of his relations-his daughter also for the House of Rep. They are all deceiving us.No saint is contesting this election.Let us only pray to God to give us a man, I repeat, a man after his own heart. Therefore, don’t sell your votes, don’t sell your future, follow your conscience and vote right. Long live Federal Republic of Nigeria.

  8. mohd kabir says:

Engr. F, is wrong for some boby to speak his mind? why do u look at muntaka statement as regional or religion centement? Buhari was tested and trusted in PTF and has Nigeria in his mind. Therefore there is nothing wrong in praying for someboby that u thing he can delive.

  11. Halima Awa Ahmed says:

I am not sure how Obi Benedict Ekene conducted his own 2011 Presidential Opinion Polls in Nigeria. All I know is that his results are in gross disagreements with other independent and unbiased polls like
    mynaijapolls http://www.mynaijapolls.com/2011/featured/the-presidential-electoral-candidates/
    Gamji Poll http://www.gamji.com/
    The CP-Africa Poll http://www.cp-africa.com/2011/02/05/winner-nigerias-2011-elections/
    Nairaland Poll http://www.nairaland.com

All these polls show that Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd) and Pastor Babatunde Bakare of the CPC will be the winners of Nigeria’s 2011 Presidential elections, with President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and Arc. Mohammed Sambo of the PDP coming 2nd . Mallam Nuhu Ahmed Ribadu and Tajudeen Afolabi Adeola of CAN coming 3rd.
Obi Benedict Ekene’s polls look like an outlier in a bell curve

  12. olumide ogunkua says:

@Halima, i wonder oh! Even the one on this eminent leaders shows that Gen. Buhari is leading, Jonathan follows distantly while Ribadu is third closely.

  13. UDOFA, KINGSLEY DAVID says:

this is a noble concept! i must add that this is the point every Nigerian has always asked and looked forward to, the point where our country can successfully organize free and fair elections. once this is put in place, all other things fall into place…OUR NATION is indeed OURS and it’s time to put down our committments and souls into OUR NATION. GOD BLESS NIGERIA

    UDOFA, KINGSLEY DAVID

  14. Babatope Vickky says:

Good as opinion polls may look, the central issue here is for all registered voters across the length and breath of this nation go out on the days of elections and vote for the candidate of their choices. though, I have nothing against President J. Goodluck, but my fear is that he is being supported by those that have held this nation bound for too a long a time, 12years is a long period for a party to make meaningful developments in the life of a nation, PDP your time is up, let’s give Buhari/Bakare a chance. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I urge you all to vote massively and protect your votes, it’s within our reach a new Nigeria of our dream’

  15. PDPis introuble

  16. That is true Babatope we need change, so we Gen Buhari

  17. emmanuel says:

it is wrong for anybody to think that only the north will vote for BUHARI. i am from osun state and i will vote for him if i vote

  20. BREAKING NEWS ON PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS 2015
CAMPAIGNS OF CALUMNY: PDP AND PRESIDENT JONATHAN’S POLITICAL MANIFESTO

HAVING PRACTICALLY REALIZED THE UNPRECEDENTED ACCEPTABILITY OF GEN. BUHARI BY NIGERIANS WITH THE IMMINENTLY APPROACHING DEFEAT OF JONATHAN, THE SHIP OF GEJ AND PDP LOST CONTROL, LOST FOCUS, LOST IDEAS, LOST CAMPAIGN ORIENTATION AND CONSEQUENTLY HIT THE ROCKS AND FOOLHARDILY EMBARKED UPON CAMPAIGNS OF CALUMNY AGAINST GEN. BUHARI.
LET ME APTLY BORROW THE WORDS OF FEMI FANIKAYODE ON PDP THAT: “PDP AS WE ONCE KNEW HER HAS GONE FOREVER. THE SHIP HAS HIT THE ROCKS AND SHE HAS SUNK TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA. SHE IS DEAD AND BURIED AND MY PRAYER IS THAT HER SOUL RESTS IN PERFECT PEACE”.
PDP’S CAMPAIGNS OF CALUMNY ON AIT, NTA ETC. AND SEVERAL NIGERIAN NEWSPAPERS AGAINST OUR INCOMING PRESIDENT BUHARI WHICH BORDERS ON DETENTION OF PERSONS; WAR AGAINST INDISCIPLINE (WAI); ARRESTS OF PERSONS; TAKING OF ALHAJI UMARU DIKKO ETC., WHEN BUHARI WAS THE HEAD OF STATE, ARE PREPOSTEROUSLY RIDICULOUS! THESE ARE TO SHOW THAT GEN. BUHARI WHO WAS ABLE TO, JUST WITHIN THE SPATE OF ONLY 2 YEARS FROM 1983-1985, EFFECT SUCH GREAT CHANGE THAT POSITIVELY AFFECTED THE LIVES OF EVERY NIGERIAN, RICH OR POOR IS THE LEADER THAT NIGERIA AND COMMON NIGERIANS HIGHLY NEEDED AT THIS VERY CRUCIAL TIME THAT OUR NATION IS PASSING THROUGH HELL AND MONUMENTAL HUMILIATION UNDER THE OUTGOING PRESIDENT EBELE JONATHAN.
WE NIGERIANS MUST THANK GOD FOR HIS READINESS AND RESOLVE TO, AT LAST, GIVE US HONEST, FOCUS, INCORRUPTIBLE, CARING, MAGNANIMOUS AND LABORIOUS PRESIDENT IN GEN. BUHARI, WHO, (OUT OF THESE LUNATIC FABRICATIONS AND OFFICIAL GANGSTERISM BY JONATHAN AND HIS BEGGAR-COALITION OF CONCERNED LUNATICS AS WELL AS THEIR COWARD SPONSORS), IS NEVER ACCUSED OF CORRUPTION. HE ONLY DETAINED THE CORRUPT LEADERS AND CRIMINALS; INSTITUTED “WAI” TO INCULCATE CULTURE OF DISCIPLINE IN NIGERIANS AND THOSE ON NIGERIAN SOIL; WITHOUT AN IOTA OF COLONIAL INTIMIDATION OR DISCRIMINATION (AS PALPABLY DECIPHERED IN THE OUTGOING PRESIDENT JONATHAN), FEAR OR FAVOUR, TOOK ALHAJI UMARU DIKKO – WHO STOLE NIGERIAN WEALTH AND CARTED SAME ABROAD – FOR JUSTICE. BUHARI DID ALL THESE NOT FOR SELFISH REASON (LIKE JONATHAN WHO HAS TO, WILLY NILLY, ACCOUNT FOR TRILLIONS OF NAIRA MISSING FROM THE TREASURY), BUT FOR RAPID GROWTH AND IN THE INTEREST OF NIGERIA.
SOME “PSYCHIATRIC PATIENTS” WHO HAVE BEEN CEASELESSLY BARKING ON BUHARI’S CERTIFICATE DID NOT FORGET TO EVEN MENTION IN THEIR BARBARIC CAMPAIGNS AGAINST BUHARI ON AIT (ON MONDAY 26TH JAN. 2015 AT 21:30 HRS) THAT: “…..LATE GEN. SHEHU MUSA YAR’ADUA WHO WAS BUHARI’S CLASSMATE ALSO ACCUSED HIM OF HARSHNESS……”.
WE KNOW THAT HIGH LEVEL OF CIVILITY, MATURITY, AND RESPONSIBILITY WILL NOT ALLOW GEN. BUHARI, PROF. OSINBAJO OR A.P.C. TO REPLY TO ALL THESE CHILDISH AND IMMATURE EXHIBITION OF POLITICAL FRUSTRATION BY JONATHAN AND HIS ANUS-LICKING DOGS. HOWEVER, NIGERIANS MUST NOW REALIZE THAT OUR INCOMING PRESIDENT BUHARI DOES NOT ONLY TOLERATE CORRUPTION OR IS FEARED BY THESE HIGHLY CORRUPT ELEMENTS IN OUR SOCIETY BUT IS ALSO READY AND COMMITTED TO INSTILL:-

    1. GOVERNANCE OF DECORUM, AS AGAINST IGNOBLE PRODIGALITY OF JONATHAN’S RULE, IN AN AVERAGE NIGERIAN
    2. GOVERNANCE OF PRUDENCE, AS AGAINST JONATHAN’S HORRIBLE PROFLIGACY, IN AN AVERAGE NIGERIAN
    3. GOVERNANCE OF DISCIPLINE, AS AGAINST JONATHAN’S RULE OF INDISCIPLINE, IN AN AVERAGE NIGERIAN
    4. GOVERNANCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY, AS AGAINST JONATHAN’S RULE OF CORRUPTION, IN AN AVERAGE NIGERIAN
    5. GOVERNANCE OF HUMILITY, AS AGAINST JONATHAN’S RULE OF HIGH HANDEDNESS, IN AN AVERAGE NIGERIAN
    6. GOVERNANCE OF BELIEF, AS AGAINST JONATHAN’S RULE OF INCREDULITY, IN AN AVERAGE NIGERIAN
    7. GOVERNANCE OF HOPE, AS AGAINST JONATHAN’S RULE OF DESPONDENCY, IN AN AVERAGE NIGERIAN
    8. GOVERNANCE OF LIGHT, AS AGAINST JONATHAN’S RULE OF DARKNESS, IN AN AVERAGE NIGERIAN
    9. GOVERNANCE OF TRUTH, AS AGAINST JONATHAN’S RULE OF MENDACITY, IN AN AVERAGE NIGERIAN
    10. GOVERNANCE OF CARE, AS AGAINST JONATHAN’S RULE OF ABANDONMENT, IN AN AVERAGE NIGERIAN
    11. GOVERNANCE OF SINCERITY, AS AGAINST JONATHAN’S RULE OF DECEIT, IN AN AVERAGE NIGERIAN
    12. GOVERNANCE OF DECENCY, AS AGAINST JONATHAN’S RULE OF DECADENCE, IN AN AVERAGE NIGERIAN
    13. GOVERNANCE OF EGALITARIANISM, AS AGAINST JONATHAN’S RULE OF WICKEDNESS, IN AN AVERAGE NIGERIAN
    14. GOVERNANCE OF AMIABILITY, AS AGAINST JONATHAN’S RULE OF ENMITY , IN AN AVERAGE NIGERIAN
    15. GOVERNANCE OF ALTRUISM, AS AGAINST JONATHAN’S RULE OF EGOISM, IN AN AVERAGE NIGERIAN AND;
    16. GOVERNANCE OF TRUE DEMOCRACY, AS AGAINST JONATHAN’S RULE OF AUTOCRACY, IN AN AVERAGE NIGERIAN.

IT IS A POLITICAL NORM, GLOBALLY ACKNOWLEDGED AND PRACTICED BY DEVELOPED NATIONS, THAT POLITICAL PARTIES SERVE AS AN AVENUE WHERE VALUES AND QUALITIES ARE DISCOVERED WHICH, WHEN DISCOVERED, ARE FULLY UTILIZED TO NURTURE THE INTERESTS OF THE PEOPLE AND ACHIEVE A PROFITABLE END FOR THE FUTURE OF THE YOUTH WHO ARE THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW.

THEREFORE, I URGE ALL NIGERIANS, MUSLIMS, CHRISTIANS AND TRADITIONALISTS TO JOIN HANDS WITH THE INCORRUPTIBLE, VISIONARIC, MISSIONARIC, GOOD INTENTIONED, HONEST AND, ABOVE ALL, GOD FEARING GEN. BUHARI AND PASTOR OSINBAJO OF A. P. C. TO RESCUE AND ELEVATE OUR DEAR COUNTRY, NIGERIA, TO A PRE-EMINENT PEDESTAL WHERE NO ONE HAD, IN THE PAST, EVER AIMED AT.
LONG LIVE OUR SINCERE PRESIDENT/VP TO BE BUHARI/OSINBAJO!
    LONG LIVE A. P. C. (ALL PROGRESSIVES PARTY) !!
LONG LIVE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA !!!

    PRINCE (BARRISTER) AHMED A. ADEWOYIN
